About Gambling in Alberta

Alberta does things a little differently. The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis commission (AGLC) is both the regulator and the operator, which makes it a one-stop authority for gambling in the province. You’ll need to be 18 to play, the lowest legal age in Canada alongside Manitoba. The casino count sits at 30, and Alberta also runs roughly 6,000 VLTs in licensed bars. So between the casino floors and the machines in neighbourhood lounges, there’s a lot of ground to cover here.

Casinos in Alberta

There are 30 casinos in Alberta, and the two big cities carry most of them. Calgary alone has around seven, including Grey Eagle Resort & Casino, Cowboys Casino, Deerfoot Inn & Casino, Elbow River Casino, the Pure Casino brand, and Ace Casino. Edmonton matches it with another seven or so: River Cree Resort & Casino, Century Casino, Grand Villa, and Starlight Casino among them. Beyond the two majors, you’ll find casinos in Red Deer, Lethbridge, Grande Prairie, and Fort McMurray, plus the scenic Stoney Nakoda Resort & Casino out in Kananaskis. Between them you’ll get slot machines, table games, and at the resort properties a hotel and live entertainment too.

VLTs in Alberta

Alberta does have VLTs, and plenty of them: roughly 6,000 video lottery terminals sit in licensed bars, lounges, and taverns across the province. That’s a real part of the gambling map here, very different from Ontario or BC, where VLTs aren’t allowed in bars at all. We’re still pulling together the full venue-by-venue listings for Alberta’s VLT bars, so those location details are coming soon. Check back, because no other directory bothers to map them.

Which Regulator Oversees Gambling in Alberta?

The AGLC licenses, regulates, and operates gambling across Alberta, which makes it unusual: in most provinces the regulator and the operator are separate bodies, but here they’re combined under one roof. So the AGLC runs the lottery and the VLT network, oversees the casinos, and writes the rules, all at once. It’s a streamlined model, and it’s worth understanding if you play across provincial lines. If you want the full picture of how the rules shift from province to province, our Canada gambling law guide lays it out.

Find a Casino or VLT Near You in Alberta

The quickest way to find the nearest venue is the casino and VLT finder on this site. It lists every licensed Alberta casino, sorts by distance from wherever you are, shows you what’s open now, and hands you one-tap directions. With 30 casinos from Calgary to Fort McMurray, that beats scrolling a static list every time. And once the VLT venue listings land, you’ll be able to map those too.

Responsible Gambling Support in Alberta

Gambling should stay fun. If it stops being fun, help is free, confidential, and a phone call away. The Alberta Addiction Helpline runs 24/7 at 1-866-332-2322. The AGLC also offers a Self-Exclusion program that lets you bar yourself from Alberta casinos if you need a hard line. You’ll find more options on our responsible gambling page.
